about

“The favorite band of all our favorite bands!” – that’s WhoMadeWho in a nutshell. The three guys from Kopenhagen have been support act to nearly every leading dance rock band last year. LCD Soundsystem, Soulwax, Justice, New Young Pony Club and Daft Punk are only a few examples for bands who love WhoMadeWho and chose them as opener for their gigs.

No doubt: WhoMadeWho are the kind of band you fall in love with immediately when you hear or see them. However, you will appreciate their songs even more if you know about the big songwriters of the 60ies or the great performer bands of the 70ies. In fact, WhoMadeWho combine a harmonical knowledge and musical aesthetic that goes a lot further than today’s advanced pop bands. It’s a futuristic, mostly danceable rock sound, always two steps ahead in the evolution of today’s pop music. That’s why bands like Hot Chip and Queens of the Stone Age declare themselves true fans of WhoMadeWho. (Hot Chip asked to remix their first single TV FRIEND; Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age covers WhoMadeWho’s very first single Space for Rent on his solo tours. Check Josh doing the WMW on YouTube).

There’s a reason why WMW are amazing live performers as well as having a great talent for writing timeless songs. The band combines three completely different musical characters and merges them into a fresh new whole: Jeppe Kjellberg – the walrus bearded guitar player, has been part of the New Yorks experimental Rock and Jazz scene for years. He has even recorded a mini album with David Tronzo – guitar player of the legendary Lounge Lizards. Tomas Høffding - the bass man with the falsettovoice, has his roots in the Scandinavian Garage Rock scene (but always has been in love with fat discobasslines). And Tomas Barfod aka Tomboy is not only the drummer of the band but he’s also known for producing some of the hottest Advanced Electro/ House music of the moment. His singles for Gomma, Kitsune and Get Physical achieved a cult status with dance heads all around the world. Late Of The Pier and Erol Alkan just asked him to do a rework of their last single.

WhoMadeWho’s career started in 2006. Back then their self-titled debut album was released on Germany No.1 underground dance pop label GOMMA records. It was completely ahead of its time.
Now, here’s their new album. 13 songs that are the perfect example for a band who uses a tiny production budget to widen, expand and multi-colorize their sound without losing their soul. There’s a sexual and sensual authenticity to the breathed echoes of their first album. 13 songs which, when heard by Christian Wright – the legendary engineering - maestro at London’s Abbey Road studios – lead to the point that he at all costs wanted to master this record by himself.
The Danish guys created a brand new pop sound influenced by early 70ies Progrock as well as the complex side of disco music, with a very rough DIY pop approach and some well integrated electronic bits and drum sounds.

Take the first single THE PLOT. A ¾ rhythm pattern, which is the basis of a complex harmonic arrangement ...but never tries to show off an nerdy musical arrogance. Take THIS TRAIN: a 3 minute-Led Zeppelin-esque hippie-rock-orgasm that goes straight into Mr.Oizo techno noize and will drive every indie dance club crazy. Listen to KEEP ME IN MY PLANE, which will make you think of Hot Chip going cosmic disco. And ODE TO JOY - A never heard pure futuristical music extravaganza – a 2030 space pop item.

But in the end: It’s impossible to describe the musical genius that accounts for the world of WhoMadeWho. A wideness and complexity but at the same time simplicity and depth that’s quite unique in today’s music. Call it New Age Dance Pop. Call it Advanced Indie Disco. You have to hear – no: better feel for yourself. Because – as London’s i – D magazine put it: It’s out of any categories…it’s simply brilliant!”
